Hidden away in a quiet rural village, fringed by rice fields and a singing creek, yet less than 20 minutes’ drive from the beach, designer boutiques, international restaurants and the hip ‘n happening nightlife of Seminyak, this enchanting Villa is a magical retreat.
This gracious estate and Balinese hideaway retreat, with its manicured lawns, gorgeous gardens, alang alang thatched roofs, antiques, artwork and colonial style furnishings, rests upon a generous 3000 square metres of land. The estate comprises a grand Main House with three bedrooms, a three-bedroom Lumbung Cottage, and a romantic one-bedroom Guest Cottage.
There is also a natural rock swimming pool, an antique wooden bungalow that can be used as a playhouse or an extra bedroom for kids, and two traditional lumbung rice barns, which serve as massage pavilions.
This Villa is a true Bali classic; a group of 14 people could stay here and still lose each other within its depths. This feeling of seclusion and privacy extends into the blissful gardens, which are full of surprises, including some magnificent mature trees and a secret meditation garden bordered by rice terraces. The villa is ideal for families with children, groups of friends, yoga retreats, weddings and events.
A pair of fragrant, white-flowering frangipani trees marks the entrance to the Main House, meeting to form a natural archway across the path. From here, a wooden bridge over a fish pond, flanked by two bubbling urns, brings guests into the grand living area, which is open on two sides to the front and rear gardens.
Huge pillars support the high alang alang thatched roof, above a polished concrete floor furnished with an oversized daybed in the centre, two large antique coffee tables and colourful floor cushions. A pictorial antique screen decorates one wall, and a built-in antique cupboard houses a Bose sound system with surround sound speakers. In one corner is a circular, carved antique table with eight chairs, suitable for breakfast or casual dining, while adjacent to the kitchen is a large dining table for ten. The kitchen has an open-plan area at the front, linked to this formal dining space by a service bar; it is eclectically decorated with colourful traditional glass paintings from Java, and shelves full of antique vessels and jars. The modern main kitchen is hidden behind, and fully equipped with everything that the cook needs in order to create delicious meals for her guests.
A flight of stairs leads up to a fan-cooled TV den and office, positioned upon a mezzanine. This cosy-yet-spacious nook is furnished with two comfortable daybeds and equipped with a TV and DVD player. This is a great spot for gathering with family members to watch a movie, or escaping to write e-mails or simply relax. WiFi internet access is available.
The air-conditioned master bedroom, located upstairs (on the opposite side of the building to the TV room), is a unique, curved room with a wooden floor and glassless windows open to delightful garden views. The four-poster, queen-size bed sits within a romantic muslin tent, complete with an air-conditioner and a fan. The room is also furnished with a large daybed and an antique cupboard with traditional textile-covered doors. A sunny, garden bathroom is situated at the bottom of the stairs; it serves the master bedroom with a huge bathtub, a standing shower, and a terrazzo washbasin.
Two more guest bedrooms are positioned downstairs with a shared garden bathroom. One is furnished with a queen-size four-poster bed, and a cabinet with traditional batik-printed cloth doors. It is equipped with air-conditioning and a fan, and features a terrazzo floor and glass doors that open to the garden. The other bedroom has a huge oversized king bed, an antique cabinet and wardrobe, air-conditioning and a fan. The adjoining shared bathroom is almost identical to the master bathroom, with a huge bathtub open to the sky, a standing shower, twin terrazzo washbasins, and a large wall mirror.
Presenting three air-conditioned bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open living space, the rustic Lumbung Cottage is perfect for a family. The cottage has been designed around a pair of traditional rice barns, known as lumbung, which have been combined to form one house under two distinctive horseshoe-shaped roofs. On the ground floor is an open-sided, fan-cooled sitting area with a table for breakfast or an informal lunch. Next to this is an air-conditioned bedroom with a tiled floor and glassless shuttered windows, furnished with a double bed, table and chair.
The ensuite bathroom is fashioned in polished concrete and fitted with a sculptured polished concrete washbasin and a walk-in shower. Upstairs are two more air-conditioned bedrooms with a shared bathroom in-between, directly accessed by separate doors from each bedroom. With large windows that open to a view of the garden, the bedrooms feature woven bamboo walls and polished wood floors under the arched lumbung roof; each is furnished with a double bed, tables and bedside lamps. The bathroom is characterised by a floor crafted in traditional green Javanese tiles, and fitted with twin washbasins in sculptured terrazzo, and a walk-in shower within a glass cubicle.
The one-bedroom Guest Cottage is a standalone building situated near the main entrance to the property. The ground floor features an open-air terrace furnished with a bench seat, while the upstairs incorporates a huge bedroom with a polished timber floor, a soaring thatched roof and an integrated balcony that is open at the front, with garden views, a wooden balustrade for safety, and bamboo blinds that can be dropped for privacy. Cooled by natural breezes and a ceiling fan, there is no need for air-conditioning in this room; which is furnished with a king-size four poster bed, and an enormous mirror with a carved wooden frame. The ensuite bathroom is fitted with a walk-in shower set within a glass cubicle. This guest cottage is ideal for a couple looking for a romantic escape and privacy away from the main house.
